New Vaccination Requirement for Students Entering Grades 7 & 12

New Vaccination Requirement for Students Entering Grades 7 & 12

Dear Parents and Guardians of Students Entering Grades 7 & 12,

The Clark-Shawnee Local School District is committed to providing a healthy and safe learning environment for all students. As part of our close collaboration with local health officials to achieve that goal, the Clark County Combined Health District asked that we alert all parents to new immunization requirements for students entering the 7th and 12th grades in the 2016-17 school year.

From the Ohio Department of Health:

New Meningococcal Immunization Requirements for Ohio Schools

New immunization requirements for schools in Ohio will start with the 2016/2017 school year.

Students entering 7th grade will need to have one dose of meningococcal (serogroups A, C, W and Y) vaccine in addition to the current requirement of having one dose of the Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis) vaccine.

Students entering 12th grade will need to have a second dose of meningococcal vaccine. The second dose must be administered on or after the 16th birthday. If the first dose of meningococcal vaccine was administered after the 16th birthday, a second dose is not required.

Meningococcal vaccines help protect against the bacteria that cause meningococcal disease. These infections don’t happen very often, but can be very dangerous when they do. Meningococcal disease refers to any illness that is caused by Neisseria meningitidis bacteria. The two most severe and common illnesses caused by these bacteria include infections of the fluid and lining around the brain and spinal cord (meningitis) and bloodstream infections (bacteremia or septicemia) – CDC 2015

If you have any questions regarding immunizations, please contact your healthcare provider or the Clark County Combined Health District. An updated immunization record must be provided to the school on entry to grades 7 & 12. Failure to provide documentations of these vaccines will result in exclusion from school until the requirement is met.

Thank you for your cooperation.
