Dear Clark-Shawnee Families,
We have had a great week with all of our in-person students together this week and appreciate the ongoing support and understanding of our families as we have navigated our way through the pandemic. While we are grateful for the many positives we have experienced during our transition back to full in-person learning, we wanted to update you about the challenges we experienced this week at Reid School.
On our Virtual Learning Day on Wednesday, a major structural issue was discovered at Reid School. The district has contacted a structural engineering firm to help us address these issues. The team has started evaluating the facilities and anticipates having a plan to remedy the issue and a timeline for repairs mid-week next week. Right now, we know that a primary roof support structure failed in the oldest part of the building - constructed in 1921. This was attributed to age, leaks over time, and the weight of rain/snow over time.
Their initial discoveries have made it clear to our Board and Administration that we cannot resume school at Reid right now. Keeping our students and staff safe is the first principle of all of our decision-making, and we know that means finding an alternate solution for Reid students and staff. Along with ensuring student and staff safety, we also emphasized the importance of offering students as much in-person learning as possible. These plans include relocating some Reid classrooms to Possum and Rockway.
With those priorities in mind, we have created the following plan to move forward:
Reid students will continue to learn online from March 1 through March 12, 2021. We will continue to use our Virtual Learning Make-Up Day framework during this period of online learning.
Beginning March 15, 2021, Reid students will attend school in-person each day at the following locations:
Kindergarten and first grade students will attend school in-person at Kindergarten Village, 3835 Old Clifton Road.
Second through fourth grade students will attend school in-person at Rockway School, 3500 West National Road.
Fifth and sixth grade students will attend school in-person at Possum School, 2589 South Yellow Springs Street.
These relocations only affect Reid students and staff.
Possum, Rockway, and Shawnee students will continue to learn in-person at their respective schools.
Virtual Learning Academy students in grades K-6 will continue with their live instruction remotely.
Our team explored all the options immediately available to us to provide in-person learning for Reid students and this was the best solution we have right now to get your child back to five days a week in-person learning as quickly as possible. The next two weeks will be used to prepare the classrooms and facilities for students.
As a parent, I try to make decisions for all students the way I would for my own children. I know that parents want to know their children are valued, cared for, and protected while they are at school. While this situation is far from ideal, I want you to know that we are making all of our decisions with your student's safety and well-being at the forefront, the same way we would for our own children.
We will continue to communicate with you about any impacts you may experience as a result of these changes. Thank you for your continued support of our staff as we work through these challenges. Please click here for a PDF version of this update.
