Clark-Shawnee Sets Ribbon Cutting and Open House Date for New Elementary School

Clark-Shawnee Schools invites community members to join the district on Friday, August 13, 2021, to celebrate the opening of the new Shawnee Elementary Schools and the completion of the renovation of Shawnee Middle and High School.
The new Shawnee Elementary will open as the new school for all Preschool through 6th Grade Shawnee Braves on the first day of school on Wednesday, August 18, 2021. The renovation of Shawnee Middle and High School, home to secondary students in grades 7-12, was completed in November of 2020.
“None of this would be possible without our generous and supportive community and we are grateful for their investment in the collective future of our district,” said Superintendent Mr. Brian Kuhn. “We can’t wait to share with our community the opportunities ahead in the new Shawnee Elementary and Shawnee Middle and High School and for everyone to see first-hand what we have accomplished together.”
The construction of the elementary school and comprehensive renovation of the middle and high school is a funding partnership between the district and the state’s Ohio Facilities Construction Commission. In August 2017, voters approved a $37 million bond issue to fund the local portion of the project; the state contributed 30 percent of the basic costs, or about $15.6 million.
The architect for the project is SHP Leading Design and the Construction Manager At-Risk is Peterson Construction.
The 122,000-square-foot elementary building features modern classroom learning environments, updated instructional technology, collaborative learning areas throughout the building, and intentionally designed learning spaces for art, music, physical education, and more. Modernized safety features based on best practice recommendations include a secure entry vestibule, an advanced security camera system, state-of-the-art communication systems, and the ability to secure portions of the building if needed.
The Shawnee Middle and High School renovation was a comprehensive renovation to update all aspects of the facility, including air conditioning, electrical, and plumbing. Furnishings throughout the building were replaced and all classrooms were updated, including state-of-the-art improvements to science labs. Both of Shawnee High School’s gymnasiums were renovated, including new seating, and security features like updated camera and communications systems and a secure entry vestibule were installed.
The new elementary school is located on the northeast corner of Selma and Possum Roads, across the street from Shawnee Middle and High School. The district will vacate Possum School, Rockway School, and Reid School and will share later this summer plans for the future of these sites.
“This is an exciting team to be a Shawnee Brave, not just for our students and staff, but for our families, residents, and entire Shawnee community,” said Superintendent Kuhn. “We hope the entire community will join us to commemorate the opening of the new schools and all the amazing things ahead for Clark-Shawnee Schools.”
The celebration will begin with a ribbon-cutting at 4 p.m. at the front of the school, located at 1841 East Possum Road Springfield. Immediately following the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony, both Shawnee Elementary and Shawnee Middle and High School will be open for community members to walk through.
A virtual walkthrough of the new building will be shared online the week of August 16th  for community members who cannot attend. Please continue to visit clark-shawneek.k12.oh.us for more information about the new building and the district.
