Girls on the Run at Shawnee Elementary
Girls on the Run is in full swing at Shawnee Elementary! This inspiring program for elementary girls combines physical activity with life lessons that build confidence, character, and connection. With the guidance of five volunteer coaches, these students engage in activities that blend physical activity with life lessons focused on self-worth, emotional intelligence, and teamwork.
“I hope to see the young ladies in this group grow in a variety of ways, self-esteem, leadership skills, physical health, and building connections. For some girls, that may be becoming a better friend, for others, it may be building self-confidence or stepping out of their comfort zone. Any form of growth is an accomplishment, and that is the overall goal of this group,” said Guidance Counselor Aliah Barker.
The after-school program includes 27 students from 3rd through 6th grade, with Shawnee Elementary staff volunteering their time as “coaches,” organizing activities, building relationships, and encouraging each student participant.
Unlike traditional sports or clubs, Girls on the Run offers something unique. The program combines fitness, fun, and emotional development through curriculum and activities that emphasize inner strength and social-emotional wellness. Themes such as friendship, confidence, and problem-solving are explored through interactive lessons and games, helping participants grow both mentally and physically.
“We want to provide a welcoming and safe space to nurture these girls as they grow and thrive,” said Barker. “Upper elementary and middle school can be challenging for young girls. That is why any step forward, no matter how big or small, is a success we want to celebrate! Knowing they have a team to count on makes all the difference.”
