Middle Honors David Christoff, Class of 1999
For the past 16 years, Shawnee Middle School students have visited Arlington National Cemetery during their Washington D.C. trip to remember and honor the life and sacrifice of David Christoff, Shawnee High School, Class of 1999.
David joined the Marines the day after 9/11 because he felt a calling to serve his country. During his service in Iraq, he threw himself on top of his men during a roadside bomb attack, saving lives and earning a Purple Heart. After returning home, David believed his mission was not finished and chose to return to Iraq, where he later gave his life while serving our country.
Since their first visit to the gravesite in 2010, David’s story and the sacrifice of many other Shawnee High School graduates have left a lasting impact on countless Clark-Shawnee students and staff. What began as a tradition has become a powerful reminder that courage, sacrifice, and service are carried by real people and real families.
Yesterday, May 22, 2026 marked the 20th anniversary of David’s sacrifice. While visiting Arlington this week, students and staff unexpectedly met David’s mother, who was also there paying her respects.
It was a moment that turned history into something deeply personal and unforgettable. Some lessons are learned in classrooms. Others are learned while standing beside the legacy of a true American hero.
As we head into Memorial Day weekend, moments like these remind us that behind every flag and every name is a family, a story, and a sacrifice worth remembering.
